A great day had by all!!!

Did I really sign up for this. Ha! Ha! Not looking!!!

On Saturday 24th July 2010. Our club Captain Steve Gedny hosted his Captains Day. A large field of over 130 players took part in glorious weather, competitions were held for members, ladies, junior, corporate members and guest’s, with players starting on the 1st & 10th tees. The winner of the main competition the “Captains Prize” was Simon Baker with a very good score of 45 points. The day also comprised of a B-B-Q attended by partners and children to make a great family atmosphere enjoyed by all. To round the day off Geoff Swain “International Trick Shot Golfer” provided the entertainment with the help of the Club Captain and various club members who were called up to have a go. Club Captain would like to thank Steve, Lizzie, Frank and Craig along with all other staff members for their help in planning the event and on the day. Also a very big thank you to Vice Captain Trevor Middleton, Mike Dyke and Matt Gedny for all their hard work during the day to make sure everyone had a great time. Finally thank you to everyone who sponsored holes or donated prizes for the raffle. From the feed back received I am glad to say everyone had a fantastic day which reflected well on the club and all its members. As a result the Captains Project Fund now stands at £2164. Well done to everyone!

England may not do it in Africa but they do at the “Meridian”

On Sunday 18th July the club held its yearly England v’s The Rest of the World match with the Rest of the World confident of another win.

The Rest of the World led off. Captained by Harry Tteralli and partnered by Brian Woodward they got off to a quick start with a 3 & 1 win over club captain Steve Gedny and Rob Dyke.

England soon hit back with Scott Barker and Paul Scott winning 2 & 1 over Ian Brushett and bruce Kempton quickly followed with another England win for Trevor Middleton and Chris Mertens 3 & 2.

The good news continued for England with wins for Roy Smith and Colin Russell, Tony Clarke and Peter Hulyer, before Densley Charles and Derek Moatt pulled one back for the Rest of The World.

The final result being a win 5 – 2 for England. yipee!!!!

Meridian v’s Cambridgeshire Police

Thursday 24th June had the club play its latest friendly match against Cambridgeshire Police with the added spice of our Captain playing against his colleagues and also the police having some club members in their team.

First to tee off were captain Steve Gedny and young Rob Dyke who played out a very tense match which was all square going down the 18th, with Steve and Rob winning 1 up with the final putt of the match.

Dave Reid and Dave Collins followed in with a bigger winning margin of 4 & 3 as did Gary Wilson and Vinnie Green winning by the same margin. Les Thorne and vice captain Trevor Middleton could not quite complete the whitewash losing the last match. The final score being a win for the Meridian 3 to 1.

This means that in all matches layed in the Dereck Burridge, Jock Stewart, Friendly league and Friendly’s we remain unbeaten.

Juniors take the first, Regular, Senior & Junior Competition

The first of what hopes to be an annual event, took place on Sunday 20th June 2010.

The regular, senior and junior sections met for a triangular match. Each team consisted of ten players going out in 3balls with the best 8 scores of each team to count.

By the end of the day there were some very good scores in with Ed Sandford on 43 pts ocb, Jamie Sandford on 43 pts & Rob Dyke on 42pts all from the junior section.

Roger Harrrison and Guy Heard led the seniors in with 41 & 40 pts respectively.

The regular members section was won by Bill Heslop with 40 pts.

The final winners with 300 pts were the Junior section with the regular and senior sections tying on 289 pts.

Everyone enjoyed this new competition and the return match will be eagerly anticipated next year.

THE CLUB RAISES FUNDS FOR “HELP FOR HEROES”

Saturday 19th June saw the club come together to hold a Texas Scramble with the aim to raise funds for the “Help the Heroes” charity.

The event was won by the team consisting of :

Scott Barker, Phil Barker & Paul Scott with a score of 64.5

Vinnie Green, Tony Merrion & Andy Phillips came a close second with 65.4

A total of £180 was raised on the day for a very deserving cause. The club thanks everybody for taking part.

Jock Stewart Memorial Trophy

Saturday 10th April 2010 was the day to see a “Meridian” team of six take on Heydon Grange at home in the “Jock Stewart Memorial Trophy”.

Gubby Panesar and Dave Reid won 2 & 1 in the handicap group for 6 to 10.

Tony Merrion and Vinnie Green lost 4 & 3 in the handicap group 11 to 14.

The win on the day was sealed by rob Dyke and Kieran Edwards, who had a fine win 6 & 4 in the 15 to 20 handicap group.

Well done to the team on a fine performance, they will now face Orton Meadows at home in the next round.

Saturday 3rd April Cambridge Meridian took on Orton Meadows in the seconde round of the Derek Burridge Challenge Trophy.

Cambridge Meridian got off to a flying start from Gubby Panesar and Andy Breacker, with a 7 & 6 win.

The second group off was Chris Drake partnered by Ed Sandford, playing in his first competition. They continued the winning trend with an outstanding win of 8 & 6.

Vinny Green and Tony Merrion followed and won a closely fought match by 3 & 1.

Next came Meridian Captain Steve Gedny and the young Rob Dyke, who was also making his debut. After a slow start and leaving them 3 down, they fought back to win 2 & 1.

The final pair to leave the clubhouse and take to the course were Dave Reid and Chris Mertens. They took on the challenge with force and won with a brilliant 6 & 4.

Overall an excellent triumph on the day beating a well organised and strong team from Orton Meadows.

Cambridge Meridian took the day with a 5 & 0 score.

Well done to the team who will now play the winners of the Bassingbourn v Cromwell match away from home.

Daily Mail National Classic

On Saturday 30th January 2010 Cambridge Meridian took on John O’Gaunt in the Daily Mail National Classic.

The Team consisited of Steve Gedny, Gubby Panesar, Chris Drake, Tony Merrion and Sam Cranwell. Trevor Middleton attended as non playing captain to provide some welcoming moral support.

On a tough course away from home against strong opposition, the team gave a very good account of themselves.

Chris Drake halving the final match.

This meant Chris had to go down the 1st in a sudden death play off, which he was unlucky to lose to a birdie.

Well one to John O’Gaunt and good luck to them in the next round.

2 Wins on the trot for Lee

: Ass Pro Lee Laughlin

Lee Laughlin our very own assistant professional is doing well in the Cambs and Beds Pro Am season.

Lee has come in on the last two pro am’s with some excellent positions.

At the “Bedford Pro Am” he came in second place and just recently at the “Thomson Tour Portugal Vila Sol Open” a very respectical fourth place.

It appears that some of his golfing skills are starting to rub off on his team mates, as Team Laughlin beat all the other competitors at the “Thomson Tour Portugal Vila Sol Open” to take first place.

Those who took part in Portugal to make it a number one, were Lee Laughlin(Assistant Professional), Pete Laughlin, Simon Baker and Jason Landells. Well done to all the team.

Captains Drive-In 2010

Sunday 3rd January 2010 saw the club section Captains take thier place for the first drive in of the new year. The day was a success with all the sections being represented by a good field of players. Although the course was being played on the short nine circuit due to the adverse weather seen all over the country, the spirit of all the players were high. The weather although very cold was bright and sunny which helped bring in some good scores considering the very conditions under foot.

Willy Wilson took the day’s play with a score of 36 pts in this Stableford format. Bill Heslop came in second with a very respectable 35 and Darren Gilhart came home with a 35 on countback.

On the drive-ins by each of the captains, it was Sam Cranwell the junior captain that led the way with an outstanding 259yards drive. Steve Gedny the mens captain shot an 199yd drive and John Tudor the senior captain drove 162yards.

Congratulations to all that took part in the day and the day rose £200 for the Captains project .
