Friday 18th September had 27 teams playing in this years Pro-am. The pro-am was the final event in a three day tournament, which had the top Golf Club professionals from around the region playing in the PGA East Region “Order of Merit”. The Meridian Classic.

With the professionals selected from the previous two days “Order of Merit” the teams were matched up.  The playing conditions couldn’t have been any better with the course being in bright sunshine and very little wind the day got under way.

The PGA set the tone with some professionalism, announcing the teams as they were timed to tee off and refereeing the match throughout the day.

The day was closely fought by all and this showed in the returning scores and only 12 shots between the top of the board and the bottom.

The overall winning team on the day were Sean Whiffin (Professional from The Hertfordshire Golf & CC) Wayne Richardson, Toby Tye and Adam Etock with an excellent score of 130.

In 2nd place all with 133 were Richard Beadles, S Moses, J Roake & P Vater.

In 3rd place also with 133 were Mark Sturgess, K Bryce-Smith, M Marx & G Mortimier.

Wednesday and Thursday 16th & 17th September saw the club host the PGA East Region “Order of Merit” for the second year.

102 Professionals from across the region took part in this 2 day event.

The weather conditions on Wednesday were extremely windy and left a lot for the competitors to do the chase a good round. The scores coming back into the clubhouse reflected this with only eight players being able to come in under par or par the course.

The last three to go were the overnight leakers Luke Eggleston, Stuart Lunn-Walker & Andrew George. All three played some excellent golf during the day, but the day and event went to Luke Eggleston by returning a score of 70 at 2 under to complete the tournament with a score of 139 at 5 under for the 2 days.

The final positions for the competition were, first place Luke Eggleston from Orsett Golf Club with a score of 139 at 5 under. Nick Bosher Club Champion 2009

Saturday &  Sunday 8th & 9th  August was the weekend for the Club Championships. All members of the club who had played in at least 3 qualifing competitions over the year, were invited to play for the title of “Club Champion 2009″. The weekends competition were looking to crown 2 new champions. The Club Champion (gross) and the Net Champion.  With the course in an excellent condition and the weather was also on our side with bright sunshine and not a drop of rain insight. The members of the club who had signed up, started out in this drawn competition. Saturday saw the first days play return some very good scores with the top 3 scores going to Nick Bosher (who was defending his title) with a score of 75, Dave Reid and Ian Cochrane with a score of 76. These three scores would mean that they would be the last to leave the clubhouse on Sunday and play to take the title “Club Champion”. Play on Sunday went ahead as expected and the weather although a little cloudier than the day before it heralded some excellent playing conditions for the golfers on the second days play.  After a nailbiting couple of hours it was becoming obvious that there were only going to be 3 people in contention for the title. The leaders from Saturday were playing out of thier skins but there was one name who was coming to the fore, Nick. After some excellent golf over the weekend from all members of the club the competition was drawing to a close with the last group putting out on the 18th. After a check on the scorecards the winners were announced. 1st place, Nick Bosher with 75 giving a score of 146 for the weekend, 2nd place Ian Cochrane with 78 giving a score of 154 for the weekend and in 3rd place was Dave Reid with 80 giving a score of 156 for the weekend.

The Seniors Open was held on Wednesday 5th August. With 84 competitors from clubs across the region, the day got off to a good start. The conditions on the day were excellent and even the rain stayed off.  The standard of play returned some outstanding scores in this four ball, better ball, stableford competition. The overall day was rounded off with a great meal and a beer or two in the clubhouse and some serious tales of that nearly “holed in one” or just missed it by a whisker stories. As the score were starting to come into the clubhouse it was obvious that the leaderboard was going to be a close one. The winners on the day were Steve Lythell and Derek Filler from “Manor of Groves” Golf Club with a brilliant score of 48pts. Unfortunately Dereks playing partner Steve had to leave before the presentation. The picture shows Derek Filler on the left being presented with the first prize form John Tudor the Vice Captain of the Seniors section. In  second place with a score  of 46pts was Doug Misson and Cuth Suttle from Newmarket Links Golf Club. Third place on count back went to Colin Bell and John Banks from Bury St Edmonds with 45pts. This years longest drive which was on the 14th went to Jim Lawlor with an amazing 260yd drive the nearest the pin which was on the 3rd was won by Keith Cady. All in all the day was a great success and a good day was had by all.

2009 Winner Chris Langford

2009 Winner Chris Langford

July saw the second “English Ladies’ International Senior Open” take place at Cambridge Meridian Golf Club.
The 3 day, 54 hole event which was played over 14th, 15th & 16th July, saw competitors arrive from as far afield as the USA, France, Germany, Belguim, Netherlands and from across the UK.  Last years winner, Rica Comstock also flew in from the USA to defend her title.
Heavy rain was seen during the first days play but this did not stop some excellent scores were being returned. The leader for the day was Chris Langford with 73 gross and closely behind her was Cathy Panton-Lewis and Helen Reid both with 76 gross.
The second days play proved to be just as diffiercult with some very strong winds but again this did not deter the golfers. Chris Langford again had an excellent round and stretched her lead with a score of 75 gross for the day, which gave her an overall combined score of 148 gross over the 2days so far. In second place with an combined score of 154 gross was Cathy Panton-Lewis and Jane Rees in third with 157.
The weather for the last days play couldn’t of been better. With the sun shining  and the course in excellent condition, the competitors played to close the gap between the top of the leaderboard and the bottom.  At the turn some good golf had been played by all and this was proved with the gap between the three top positions  closing.  Corinne Reybroeck played a blinder of a game and returned as the winner for the day and a new course record holder with a score of 72 gross. In second place for the day was Rica Comstock with 73 gross and in a close third place was Jane Rees with 74 grosss. However with a score for the day of 78 gross and a combined overall score for the event of 226 gross Chris Langford was crowned as the winner for the tournament.  In second place overall was Cathy Panton-Lewis with 230 gross. Overall net winner for the competition was Jane Rees with a score of 222. Chris Langford came second with a score of 226.
Closing the tournament Chris thanked everbody at the club and all her competitors for an excellent standard of golf which had been played over the 3days. She wished all well and said: “I look forward to coming back next year to see you all again and defend my title”
