Cambridge Meridian Golf Club was selected to be the venue of the “Cambs & Hunts” Ladies’ County Championship over the weekend of the 8th, 9th & 10th May 2009.

Day 1 – Friday  8th
38 lady golfers from clubs across the region arrived at the club on Friday 8th to complete 36 holes of stroke play to guarantee one of 32 places available in the championship to be played over the next two days.
With the course in excellent condition, the ladies’ started out on brilliant form and have to be commended on thier resilience and spirit as the weather conditions worsened. With strong winds and sometimes driving rain the ladies’ completed the first day with some excellent scores, that golf professionals would be proud of.
The leaders at the end of the first days play were:
  • Caroline Agnew from Links Golf Club Newmarket on 158
  •  Janet Phipps from Gog Ma Gog Golf Club on 161 (ocb)
  • Bethany Peckham from Menzies Golf Club on 161
Day 2 – Saturday 9th
With the 32 ladies’ qualifing from the previous days strokeplay competition. The County Championship could start in earnest. The c0mpetition would be a matchplay knockout format and played over 4 rounds during Saturday and Sunday. With the weather conditions being a little better than on Fridays, although still a little windy, the scores being returned did not reflect this.
After the first round of the day the  following players had made it through to the quarter final to be played after lunch.
  • Caroline Agnew winning 2 & 1
  • Amy Rae winning 2 up
  • Jackie Gregg winning  7 & 5
  • Chelsey Herbert winning 3 & 1
  • Paula Parker winning 2 & 1
  • Lisa Charlton winning 1 up on the 20th
  • Julie Walter winning 3 & 2
  • Janet Phipps winning 2 up
  • Tina Broadley winning 6 & 5
  • Cindy McIntyre winning 2 up
  • Elizabeth Smith winning 1 up
  • Claire Tuttle winnign 1 up
  • Rosemary Walker winning
  • Jennifer McGuigon winning 8 & 7
  • Greta Barclay winning 2 & 1
  • Marcellea Tuttle winning 4 & 3
Quarter Final after lunch
Again all the ladies’ showed grit and determination in their golfing skills and didn’t allow the wind to put them off their games.  All the matches showed the following supporters how exciting ladies’ golf can be and in true fashion none of the quarter finalist let the side down. Every match was closely fought and a couple of matches went to the wire. With the days play now drawing to a close the following had made it through to the semi finals to be played on Sunday.
  • Tina Broadley winning 6 & 5
  • Claire Tuttle winning 3 & 2
  • Jenny McGuigon winning 5 & 3
  • Marcella Tuttle winning 5 & 3
  • Caroline Agnew winning 3 & 1
  • Jackie Gregg winning 1 up
  • Paula Parker winning 2 & 1
  • Julie Walter winning 2 & 1
Day 3 – Sunday 10th
Now on day 3 of this prestigious event the last 8 were setting their eyes on one thing, the Championship. The playing conditions on the day were excellent with very little wind and bright sunshine.
The 8 semi finalist showed the same grit and determination as they had done so on the first day and played the course to its best. This was shown in some of the best golf to be played over the three days with one match, Marcella Tuttle’s being taken down the 19th.  With the morning’s golf being completed, we now had our finalist for the Plate Competition and County Championship.
Plate Competition Finalist
  • Tina Broadley from winning 2 & 1
  • Marcella Tuttle from winning 1 up on the 19th
County Championship finalist
  • Caroline Agnew from winning 3 & 2
  • Julie Walter from winning 3 & 2
The afternoon started with the plate competition and both ladies’ showed the way, playing one for one until the 8th when Tina made her move to go one up. Marcella played great golf and fought hard to keep in the game but was finally defeated and Tina won the match 6 & 5.
The Championship was the last to go and with a great following of supporters both Caroline and Julie played golf, which was pure magic to witness.  Again a very closely fought match, which kept everybody on tender hooks, was finally won by Julie Walter winning 3 & 2.
The Plate and County Championship were sponsored and presented by Norman Ewing of Ewing Associates.
The 3 day event was an outstanding success and congratulations have to go out to all the competitors, organisers and supporters who took part, especially to Julie Walter on being crowned Ladies’ “County Champion 2009″
Did I really do that??????

Danny Lans sees his return to the club with a beauti of a shot.

Teeing up on the 17th on a somewhat cold and windy bank holiday Monday. Danny strikes his ball with some professionalism to send it flying over the lake and hit home on target and sink it to the bottom of the cup in one.

Celebrations took place in the clubhouse after the game with a couple of swift pints and the ringing of the “Hole in One” bell.

All congratulate Danny on his first “Hole in One”.

Saturday 18th April saw a Cambridge Meridian team playing away in the “Jock Stewart” Cup at Brampton Golf Club.

The Meridian took a team of six, Chris Drake and Gubby Panesar leading off followed by Manoj Patel and Vinnie Green with the two new boys in the last group being Ed Sandford and Lewis MacNamara.

Another tough draw away from home but Cambridge Meridian came through to win 2 matches to 1 and now face St Neots or Bar Hill in the next round.

Chris and Gubby came through 3 and 2 winners with Manoj and Vinnie winning  on the 18th.

Ed and Lewis finally lost 2 down having levelled from one stage being 3 down.

Another great team effort.

Thanks must go to Brampton Golf Club for putting on a good match.

The second of the “Daily Mail” was played at Gifton Golf Club.

Our team for this match was made up of Chris Drake, Dave Reid, Manoj Patel, Steve Gedny & Nick Bosher.

This was always going to be a tough match against a strong Girton side on their home course. Things were going well, with Cambridge Meridian looking the likely winners at the half way stage but a strong fight back by the home team resulted in them winning 3 and a half to 1 and a half.  Manoj kept his 100%  record by coming from 3 down again to win. Chris came in with a half.  Steve, Dave and Bosh all lost on the 18th, all in all a very close match.

Well done to Girton Golf Club and thanks for a good match.

Our team of 5 was made up with two new faces, in the shape of Steve Gedny(Vice Captain) and Manoj Patel. The more established members of the team were Dave Reid (Mens Captain), Chris Drake and Pete Laughlin.

Bourn put out their strongest team leaving us with a tough task to fulfill.

The star of the show was Manoj holing from 165yds on the 14th for a two nett one, to start his come back from 3 down to win 2 and 1.

Chris won 4 and 2. Steve won 3 and 1. Dave losing 4 and 3. Pete sealed the team performance with a good effort winning 2 and 1.

The match score of 4 to 1 goes to the Cambridge Meridian Golf Club. A very satisfying win.

The match against Northern League winners Lakeside Lodge Golf Club was won 4 – 0 by Meridian Seniors who were winners of the Southern section of the League.

Our opponents in the Southern League were Cambridge Golf Club, Barkway Park Golf Club, Malton GolfCllub and Waterbeach Golf Club.

This represents rapid progress by the Seniors at Meridian, a young section compared to many longer established Seniors Sections. Senior Captain Bill Liddell attributes the early success to the camaraderie within the section. “It has been a pleasure to lead such a friendly group” said Bill, “they are also very enthusiastic and committed and this has resulted in a very successful season. It has also been pleasing to receive very complimentary remarks from visiting teams about the challenging nature and condition of the Meridian course.”

Meridian Seniors now have a very full annual programme of internal competitions, a fixture list of 24 matches, and a number of “away days” to visit and play new courses.
